You all know how much the people of Aceh have suffered from the earthquake and
tsunami of 26 December 2004. As of 30 December 2004, the death toll in Aceh is
estimated at 80,000 lives lost. Yet, in the midst of this suffering, the
breaking news from international media yesterday and today is that Indonesian
armed forces are continuing their military operations in Aceh. Rather than
helping the people, in a number of areas, the troops are intimidating
villagers, scaring them away from their villages and then looting their homes,
and in several cases, killing alleged separatists who are not armed.
